IT Tips and Tricks: Turn off the New Security Warnings on RDP Connections April 15, 2026 – Posted in: IT Tips & Tricks – Tags: , ,

You may have noticed that your RDP connections have started throwing up a couple of new windows when you try to connect, this change seem to affect connections to servers, PCs and terminal servers. The first popup one is a warning, it makes some good points, and you’ve probably already found the “don’t show again” box at the bottom so it doesn’t pop up next time. The second one is more irritating. It pops up every single time you connect asking which of your local resources you want to be able to access/use remotely. These options vary depending on your setup but may include:

  • Printers
  • Cameras
  • Speakers
  • Clipboard
  • Smart cards or Windows Hello
  • WebAuthn
  • Drives

Not only is this something you’ll need to select every single time you connect, but some of your users might not understand what it means. They may not realise that failing to tick clipboard will stop them copying and pasting between their local computer and their remote session. Or understand that the security keys you’ve provided for MFA won’t work on the remote session if they don’t select WebAuthn.

For now, there is a solution. This registry key will disable the popup and revert to the previous behaviour where everything pulls through based on the basis of your selections in the Local Resources tab of the RDP connector.

Key: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\Client
Name: RedirectionWarningDialogVersion
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1

Unfortunately a future Windows update could remove support for this setting, so it’s probably a good time to start educating your users on which boxes they need to tick when they connect.

The biggest takeaway from a security perspective is: Don’t open remote connection links sent via email or message app. For more information on the implications of enabling each of these options, take a look at Microsoft’s article about the new warnings.
