Have you got a working Backup Storage? July 31, 2021 – Posted in: Cyber Security, News – Tags: Cyber Security
How is my Data threatened?
Ransomware take shape in various ways, with the rapid increase of threats to our private data, it’s become one of the biggest Cyber threat trends to grace the world wide web. With a constant developing of methods to defraud our personal lives, our data is constantly at threat.
Malicious software that crawls into your system and locks you out. Ransomware injects your server with an ingenious piece of malware that demands payment upon your arrival, in order to allow you back to your personal data. Usually transferred from a defaced website or via a malevolent email, the application swiftly installs itself upon being opened, without the user even knowing, however you’ll soon be alerted when you’re required to pay a sum of their choice.
A method in which Cyber Hackers log into your Business systems and hold it ransom, the data will be released upon the criminals receiving a monetary payment from you. Although as you’ve probably figured out, what’s stopping them from keeping you locked out & keeping your money?
Can I avoid be targeted by a Hacker?
Avoiding an attack is almost impossible, you’re better of defending yourself from one. Ensuring your business is 100% protected from the overall threat of Cyber-Crime, specifically the threat of Ransomware.
As often as you update your security for your business, the malicious software involved with Ransomware is constantly changing & developing, becoming harder to stop, however keeping the same methods of attack, as long as people keep falling for dodgy emails, Ransomware will always be around, despite security vendors frequently modifying their own software & threat analysis.
What’s the best approach if we’re under attack?
You’ll want to limit your overall exposure to attack by making sure your cyber defences are up to date, as well as making sure your team are security focused, most importantly security aware.
However what we must all accept, is that at some point we will be threatened with a serious attack, and when that does happen, your last line in the defence against cyber-crime is to rely upon secure recovery point from a current, ring-fenced data backup solution.
With your data stored in a secure location, you can benefit from peace of mind, knowing that your entire system is ready to be recovered at a moment’s notice in the even of a devastating Cyber attack, to any or all of your files.
But we already backup our data to disks?
Having a Data backup at least is always good start to being secure, not so much when it’s an external disk, an undeveloped backup is by no means a protected method in storing your personal and private information from Hackers.
Backing up your Data to a disk involves several manual elements, limiting its overall efficiency in a Cyber disaster; Mainly the issue of taking the disk out of the office location and returning it each day.
Regardless of the efficiency of using a Disk, in the even of a ransomware attack, or any kind of attack at that matter, should the disk be connected to the system at the time of threat, it will most definitely be infected, rendering the backup created useless. Being too restrictive with limited means of being able to schedule backups entirely.
What do you advise we do?
Any business should function with an automated on-site + off-site backup service, authorising to the of 3-2-1 backup ruling.
3 copies of your data – one active on your server/cloud storage/computers, one local backup copy and one offsite copy.
2 forms of media – varying medium of disk or device used to store the backup copies.
1 copy held offsite.
The service should be managed and monitored day-to-day by your external IT service provider or member of internal IT personnel – with strict urgency placed on acting in the event of a failure or issue logged from the previous day’s backup.
It all sounds costly, however implementing a professional-grade backup solution doesn’t have to cost the earth; particularly if you factor in the cost and inconvenience of a total, or even partial, loss of data.
Applying these rules within your business can go a long way to ensuring a fast & effective recovery from a disaster, should you be involved with the loss or corruption of any data, however large or small.
