IT Tips & Tricks: Keep Your Feet Warm, Not Your Computer! December 19, 2024 – Posted in: IT Support, IT Tips & Tricks – Tags: IT Tips, IT Tricks, ITSupport
A top tip for the winter season – the cold weather makes under-desk and fan heaters a popular way to stay nice and snug. But computers don’t like to be too hot!
A small heater left pointing towards your PC for a couple of hours will be enough to make it warmer than it’d like to be. Overheating can cause slow running, running errors, component wear, a reduction in lifespan of hard drives or even a hard drive failure.
If your computer does overheat and turn off or refuse to boot, it isn’t necessarily terminal. If you unplug it and move it away from the heat source, take the side off if possible and let it cool down, then it may well boot properly again. Unfortunately overheating like that is bad for the components and can shorten the lifespan of your computer.
Heaters is just one of the reasons we’d recommend keeping your PC on your desk if you have space. Under the desk they can get knocked, cooked or dusty far more easily.
