This is the final article in our Cybersecurity 101 series. There are a few key items that make a significant difference to your risk of getting breached. The first is: factor in security whenever you are thinking about your IT. When you are considering new software, think about where your data might be being held and by who. Any time you talk to your IT Company about setting something up or buying a piece of hardware make sure they know that you care about security.
The quickest wins to help protect your business are:
- Strong and unique passwords – use a formula or a vault or both.
- MFA – set up multi factor authentication wherever and whenever you can.
- Your people – your staff are on the front line of keeping malicious actors out of your systems. Make sure they know what you expect of them and have the information and tools to protect you.
- Knowing your infrastructure – is your software up to date? Do you know what software is on every machine that can access your files? Do you know the specs of every device your staff are using to access their emails?
- Backups, Firewalls and Anti-Virus.
Your IT Company will be key in helping you get the information together and implement any changes you need to make your environment more secure. An ideal start point is an infrastructure audit – find every device in your office, what computers or phones your staff are using outside your office and what the status of those devices is. You can’t protect it if you don’t know what you’ve got.
